Fourth Agreement Research and Development Program

Pharmacy research and development is one of the priorities identified in the Fourth Agreement between the Commonwealth and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia. Under the Fourth Community Pharmacy Agreement (Fourth Agreement) the Professional Programs and Services Advisory Committee (PPSAC) has been established to provide advice to the Minister for Health and Ageing on the funding of, and management responsibilities for, programs and projects under the Professional Programs and Services funded by the Fourth Agreement.

The overall aim of the Research and Development Program is to identify research and development priority areas in community pharmacy service provision and then to fund projects with the greatest potential to deliver services with positive health outcomes for consumers and economic impacts for the health system. A framework of themes and categories has been developed to assist in achieving the Program aim by outlining the basis upon which each research proposal will be assessed and prioritised.

All RFTs have been advertised in the Weekend Australian in the Tenders Section, and current Request for Tenders can be found under Funding Opportunities on the website while the Tender request is open.  A closing date is advertised and late applications are not usually considered.  Information on RFTs that have been commissioned and contracted are available on the website under Funded Projects.

Third Agreement Research and Development Program

Research priorities have been used over the period of the Third Agreement to identify gaps, as well of areas if interest, for further research work to be conducted in the area of community pharmacy.  On agreement from stakeholders, a Request for Tender (RFT) document outlining the requirements of the research is developed.  The research project is then nationally advertised using an open tender process.

There are a variety of commissioned projects that have been funded under the CPA R&D Program.  A number of these are evaluation projects.  It is a requirement under the Third Agreement to evaluate all programs funded under the Pharmacy Development Program.  Some programs that have been evaluated and are currently being evaluated include: the Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP); the Medicines Information for Consumers Program; and the Domiciliary Medication Management Review Program.

If you are applying for a currently advertised RFT, further administrative information (forms, contracts etc) can be found in the Further Information section.
