South City Chemmart Bunbury, Western Australia, is the Johnson&Johnson Pharmacy of the Year for 2010.
South City Chemmart’s success as the overall winner of this year’s competition was announced at the Australian Pharmacy Professional (APP) conference on the Gold Coast.
Co-owner of the pharmacy, Craig Clark, was presented with the coveted award by Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon.
The competition is open to all Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP) accredited pharmacies. This year the contest was divided into three categories: Excellence in business management; Excellence in community engagement; and Innovation in professional services.
The category winners announced today are:
Excellence in business management: Goldfields Fullife Pharmacy ,Gympie, Qld.
Excellence in community engagement: Walsh’s Village Pharmacy, South Maroubra, NSW.
Innovation in professional services: South City Chemmart, Bunbury, WA.
The judges commended the high standard of all entries in the competition, reflecting the effectiveness of the Guild-administered Quality Care Pharmacy Program.
The judges selected South City Chemmart Bunbury as the overall winner because of its strength across all categories, particularly professional services and business management. They noted the pharmacy’s specialisation in pain management and palliative care; its program of public education evenings; its staff incentive program; and extensive innovative working relationships with local residential aged care facilities.
The competition judges said the Goldfields Fullife Pharmacy at Gympie is an example of a pharmacy which has responded positively and creatively to changes in the local business environment. Through innovative changes to its business model, with a stronger focus on delivery of health care and advice, the pharmacy has set itself apart from its competitors.
Walsh’s Village Pharmacy at South Maroubra was a clear winner in the community engagement category. Brothers Richard and Philip Walsh both have Orders of Australia (2006) because of their remarkable role in the South Maroubra community. Now they have a Pharmacy of the Year Award too!
Among the community events organised by the pharmacy are:
a charity run and fair which has attracted over 5,000 people
an enormous Christmas Carols event which recently featured a guest performance by the band Mental As Anything
a charity art show in the pharmacy forecourt featuring up to 450 artists. Over the years, the VIPs who have opened the art show have included the then NSW Premier Bob Carr, the Governor of NSW Professor Marie Bashir, local Federal MP Peter Garrett, and broadcaster Alan Jones.
The People’s Choice Award this year was won by Priceline Pharmacy Macquarie Centre. All winners receive significant cash prizes provided through the sponsorship of Johnson&Johnson. The National President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Kos Sclavos, thanked Johnson&Johnson, and said: “This competition celebrates the very high standards of service achieved by Australian pharmacies who are accredited under the Quality Care Pharmacy Program.
